For the 2021 model year, Jeep only offered the Grand Cherokee in its three-row configuration, the “Grand Cherokee L” of previous years. Then, the Grand Cherokee lineup saw further changes for the following year: the three-row 2021 Grand Cherokee was carried over and sold as the 2022 Grand Cherokee WK, alongside a newly-refreshed 2022 Grand Cherokee.

The “WK” is just a code used by Jeep and doesn’t stand for any particular term. For the sake of clarity, though, we’d say that the Grand Cherokee WK meaning is that this is actually the 2021 Grand Cherokee model being sold for the 2022 and 2023 model years. Since the 2021 Grand Cherokee sold so well and is now being offered at a lower price than the newest version, it makes sense that Jeep would keep it in the lineup for a little longer!
Another notable difference between Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee WK is the availability of two and three-row seating. The Grand Cherokee WK only comes in a three-row configuration, but the Grand Cherokee can be configured with two rows or three rows.
You might reasonably expect the two-row SUV to offer less room for cargo and passengers, but the roomier cabin actually belongs to the Grand Cherokee! It offers up to 70.8 cubic feet of cargo space, versus 68.3 for the Grand Cherokee WK.
There’s no difference between Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee base engines; both are offered with a 3.6L V6 as standard. However, only the new Grand Cherokee can be optioned with a 5.7L Hemi V8 upgrade. Rear-wheel drive is standard on both models.
Fuel economy estimates for the V6-powered models are about average for the midsize SUV segment—which is all the more impressive because you’ll enjoy far more advanced capability than you would with most other family SUVs! The Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee WK earn an estimated 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway when equipped with the V6 engine and front-wheel drive; opting for the new Grand Cherokee’s V8 trades some efficiency for power.
